In her 1982 book Secrets From a Stargazer’s Notebook, Debbi Kempton-Smith talks about Pluto in a way that lifts the sense of doom and gloom that is typically associated with this outer planet.

Pluto saves lives. He is the monster who saves the girl from marrying the wimp. —Debbi Kempton-Smith

Pluto doesn’t just change things in your life, he shows you where you have been selling yourself short in a way. Most of us know what we need to change and how, but how many of us are actually taking action to make that change?

While some astrologers say that Pluto doesn’t affect you personally, I agree with Debbi in that “Pluto is in the houses of your chart, and the house in which you find Pluto is more important than the sign he’s in.”

The planets are the players of the game of life you’re in. The signs are the outfits they wear. And it is the houses that inform us where those planets are focusing their work on in your lifetime.

Your natal Pluto tells us what sign it was in when you were born and it will fall in a specific house. However, every 15-20 years it moves signs and the transit Pluto will begin to impact different areas.

If Pluto represents transformation, then the natal Pluto tells us the core area of life you came here to transform, while the transit Pluto tells you what you are being called to transform in the moment.

In the past four years, I have been diving into the intersection of Astrology and other systems, specifically Human Design. It is thrilling to see Human Design offers us a unique message, while at the same time showing me a new way to deepen my understanding of Astrology. You see, in Human Design, specific degrees of signs are correlated to different gates which were inspired by the Chinese I Ching.

As I have reflected on this Pluto energy for 2024, I came to realize that for this entire year, the Pluto transit will only work its way through gate 60, the Gate of Limitations. This gate falls between 26-30 degrees of Capricorn and from 0-2 degrees of Aquarius.

According to the I Ching:

The acceptance of limitation is the first step in transcendence. It is the “space between” where mutation takes place. Mutation is released in limited amounts.

The world is calling for change in so many areas right now, and so many of us are feeling limited. However, when I read what this gate holds for us in the transformative container for Pluto, it gives me hope that we can accept where we are while knowing we can make way for the mutation our world needs.

If you have reached this far and you have been feeling less than hopeful, I invite you to take a moment and acknowledge that you are exactly where you need to be. While you may want to be further, as the I Ching shares, mutation is released in limited amounts. Ask yourself: what singular small shift can I take in this moment to allow myself to be an agent of change? Sometimes, it may require a nap, or a walk rather than a drastic demonstration.

A compound effect of small right actions over time could be the most supportive thing the planet could use right now, especially if you feel limited in how to be of contribution.

As we move into month two of 2024, I invite you to the possibility that change is possible and it starts with exactly where you find yourself now. And when you least expect it, Pluto has your energetic back, even when you don’t think you have the will to make it happen. The season of Aquarius will reveal your allies.
